Denver's major attractions provide services and programs for people with disabilities and impairments. From ADA-accessible parking to sensory-friendly experiences, here's a run-down of ways to enjoy the Denver Performing Arts Complex, Denver Art Museum, Denver Museum of Nature & Science and many other cultural institutions.

Denver Art Museum 


Parking & Wheelchair Access

  • Accessible parking spaces are available on 13th Avenue south of Broadway Street (in front of the Denver Public Library) and on the second level of the Cultural Center Complex Garage on 12th Avenue and Broadway.
  • All restrooms are wheelchair accessible and can be found on every level of the Hamilton and Martin buildings.
  • Wheelchairs are available for visitors free of charge on a first-come, first-served basis at the Hamilton Building’s welcome center. Portable stools are located throughout the museum and can be used for seating in galleries.
  • Elevators can be found throughout the facility.

Deaf or Hard of Hearing

  • American Sign Language interpretation and CART (real-time) captioning are available free of charge for any museum program or event; provide notice at least five business days in advance.
  • Open captions or transcripts are available in English and Spanish for all exhibition videos and select special exhibitions have accompanying audio tours. Printed transcripts of audio tours are near the exhibition entrance and available in Spanish and English.
  • Exhibition access guides featuring images of artwork with descriptive text and all explanatory exhibition text are provided. Guides written in English and Spanish are accessible by computer, smartphone and tablet; printed copies are available outside the special exhibition entrance.

Sensory-Friendly Resources

  • Social stories — visual and written guides describing various social interactions, situations, behaviors, skills or concepts — have been created to assist families with children who have autism and sensory processing differences, first-time visitors and others who prefer to prepare for new environments and situations.
  • Sensory Processing and Autism Resource (SPARK) Explorer Packs, designed and created by the Autism Community Store, can be reserved.
  • Several access programs are offered including Art & About, monthly tours designed for visitors with early-stage Alzheimer’s or dementia and their care partners, and Sensory-Friendly Mornings for kids with neurodiversity or sensory processing disorders and their families. Group tours for visitors with disabilities and custom access tours can be requested.
  • Email access@denverartmuseum.org to register for programming, book special tours and reserve equipment and SPARK packs.

Clyfford Still Museum


Parking & Wheelchair Access

Designated ADA-accessible parking is available on level P2 of the Cultural Center Parking Garage (the garage entrance is on 12th Ave between Broadway and Acoma St) and the surface lot directly across from the Museum on Bannock Street.

  • Visitors with mobility impairments also can be dropped off in the back alley and proceed by sidewalk to ramps at the front entrance, which has power-assist doors.
  • For specific questions about auxiliary aids and services, wheelchairs, strollers or other equipment needs or to request an accommodation, speak with a visitor services representative at the reception desk by calling 720-354-4880 or email info@clyffordstillmuseum.org. Wheelchairs are available free of charge.
  • The gift shop and restrooms on the ground level are wheelchair accessible along with the galleries on the second floor by means of an elevator located adjacent to the entrance lobby.
  • Bench seating is available on each floor along with stools and lightweight folding seats on request.

Visually Impaired

  • Large print exhibition text is available at the visitor services desk.
  • Spanish translation exhibition text also is available along with bilingual family guides.​

Deaf or Hard of Hearing

  • American Sign Language interpreters may be requested for any museum program with at least two weeks' advance notice via an email to info@clyffordstillmuseum.org.
  • All virtual workshops and talks and recordings of past virtual events are closed-captioned.
  • Accessible art-making workshops are facilitated by CSM educators and American Sign Language interpreted on the museum’s YouTube channel.

Info for Aides and Groups

  • Organizations and groups that serve people with disabilities may be eligible for free or reduced admission.
  • Aides who accompany visitors with disabilities receive free admission.

  • Galleries, offices, restrooms and public spaces are all wheelchair accessible. One wheelchair is available for guests, call in advance to reserve.
  • Benches are located on every floor and folding chairs available for sitting to review the art.

Wheelchair Access

  • Convergence Station is ADA accessible and navigable by crutches, walkers, wheelchairs and scooters, but some areas may require additional navigational guidance from staff members, who are available to help.
  • Elevators are available to reach upper floors and a variety of accessible restroom options are located throughout the facility.

Visually Impaired

  • Meow Wolf Denver has a two-hour audio description tour “Highlights of the Convergence” that was created specifically for guests who are blind or have low vision and features storytelling, touch exploration and play. Complete a form here to request a tour.

Deaf or Hard of Hearing

  • All videos featured in the Meow Wolf Denver exhibition can be found on kiosks located throughout the space. Closed-captioning may be turned on for some stored videos. Guests who need hearing assistance should talk to a Meow Wolf staff member for available accommodations.

Sensory-Friendly Resources

  • Convergence Station brings together art and technology through a unique, immersive storytelling experience that can be overwhelming for some guests. There are several spaces or rooms throughout the exhibition that are designed for a more minimal sensory experience, and therefore might offer a respite for participants seeking a quiet space. Ask a staff member about these spaces and consider visiting during non-peak times.
  • Sensory items can be checked out at the coat check desk free of charge, including sunglasses, noise reduction headsets, and fidget toys and spinners.
  • The Perplexiplex, a guest service lounge on the first floor, is designed to be a neutral comfort zone with sofas and chairs for when someone needs to decompress, de-stimulate, receive simple first aid or nurse/breastfeed. Contact the information desk on the first floor for availability and assistance.

Denver Performing Arts Complex


Denver's Cultural Plan highlights accessibility as one of its main guiding principles. Patrons requesting accommodations should contact the appropriate box office or 720-865-4224 prior to attending a performance or event to arrange accommodations. Some accommodation requests (e.g., American Sign Language interpreter, open captioning, etc.) may require two to three weeks to arrange.

Wheelchair Access

  • Venues at the complex are accessible or can be made accessible with special arrangements. Check the complex’s website for locations of wheelchair-accessible ramps.
  • Wheelchair-accessible seating and companion seats are available in most venues, and accessible tickets are available for online purchase or reach out to the appropriate box office for tickets and details. Patrons may purchase up to three companion seats adjacent to their accessible seat pending availability.
  • Courtesy wheelchairs are available for all theaters as well as on a temporary basis to assist guests from the arts complex garage or the 14th Street entrance to their seats. Request in advance by calling 720-865-4224 or emailing ArtsComplexPatronServices@denvergov.org.

Visually Impaired

  • Colorado Ballet, Denver Center for the Performing Arts and Opera Colorado offer audio-described performances of productions on select dates. Audio description devices are available free of charge at coat check.

Deaf or Hard of Hearing

  • Broadway tours presented by Denver Center for the Performing Arts offer open captioning for patrons who are deaf or hard of hearing on select dates. Opera Colorado utilizes a seat-back translation system, which displays lyrics in both English and Spanish.
  • Patrons who would benefit from amplified and clarified sound have complimentary use of assistive listening devices that are available at venue coat checks.

Sensory-Friendly Resources

  • Sensory kits including fidgets, noise-canceling earphones and small weighted lap mats are available at coat check in all performance venues.

Denver Museum of Nature & Science


Parking & Wheelchair Access

  • Accessible parking spaces are available in the main parking lot on the north side of the building (in the underground parking garage) and on the east side near Phipps IMAX Theater. The primary barrier-free entrance is on the north side off the main parking lot and features push-button entry. A ground-level elevator is available for Phipps IMAX Theater after 5:30 p.m. 
  • Additional elevators are in the north and south atriums, Morgridge Family Exploration Center, and Leprino Family Atrium.
  • Wheelchairs, canes and strollers may be checked out at no charge from the information desk on a first-come, first-served basis. Restrooms are wheelchair accessible, and wheelchair seating in Phipps IMAX Theater accommodates six wheelchairs.

Visually Impaired

  • Elevator controls are marked in braille, and braille maps of the museum are available.

Deaf or Hard of Hearing

  • Assisted listening devices can be checked out at no charge for most shows in Phipps IMAX Theater and Gates Planetarium. Closed captioning also is available for most shows in the Phipps IMAX Theater. To request these devices, check with an usher or the box office at least 20 minutes before a show begins.
  • American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters are available at no charge for the museum’s live programs and lectures. Allow at least one week for these requests.

Sensory-Friendly Resources

  • Resources for guests with autism or sensory needs (e.g., wiggle cushions and noise-reducing headphones) may be checked out at no charge from the information desk.

Info for Aides and Groups

  • If a guest is accompanied by a professional aide, the aide is admitted to the museum, Phipps IMAX Theater and Gates Planetarium for free (one aide per guest).
  • To make a reservation for a professional aide, request an ASL interpreter and more, call guest services at 303-370-6000 or email guestservices@dmns.org.

Denver Botanic Gardens


York Street

Note: Trained service animals are permitted, except in the herbaria due to the sensitive nature of the specimens.

Parking & Wheelchair Access

  • Most of the indoor and outdoor gardens and facilities, including restrooms and classrooms, are wheelchair accessible. Upon entry to the gardens, ask for a map showing wheelchair and stroller routes. Wheelchairs and strollers are available at no charge on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Accessible parking can be found in Denver Botanic Gardens’ parking structure.

Sensory-Friendly Resources

  • Sensory Processing and Autism Resource Kits (SPARK) are available at no cost in the Helen Fowler Library in the Freyer – Newman Center. The backpacks were designed and created by the Autism Community Store in partnership with the Autism Society of Colorado.
  • Summer low sensory mornings are offered on select days from May through August. Also, in partnership with the Colorado chapter of the SPARK! Alzheimer’s Association, Denver Botanic Gardens offers guests with mild memory loss the chance to explore the diverse world of plants on the second Wednesday of the month. A map of Chatfield Farms gardens and facilities shows paved and unpaved trails. Service dogs/animals are permitted.

Wild Animal Sanctuary


All ramps, walkways and decks are ADA, wheelchair and stroller accessible. Solar-powered audio kiosks along the elevated walkway feature four different audio recordings related to what can be viewed in a particular area, sanctuary operations or animal care and rehabilitation. On each kiosk, a QR code can be scanned with a mobile phone to open web pages with written transcripts. Desktop and mobile videos also are available for viewing at home.

Colorado Railroad Museum


An audio tour describing equipment around the railyard is available online and via smartphone, with the museum providing guests with Wi-Fi access. The tour also can be heard by calling 303-800-1303.

 

Buffalo Bill Museum & Grave


The entire site is wheelchair-accessible and handicap-accessible restrooms are available in the museum. Closed-captioned videos are provided in the museum, and certified service animals are allowed.

Children's Museum of Denver at Marsico Campus


  • Every exhibit is wheelchair accessible and wheelchairs are available at the front desk.

  • Museum staff receive ongoing training to make sure that every child and family have the best visit possible and daily educational programs are designed for inclusion.
  • During low-sensory evenings offered throughout the year, attendance is limited and ambient noise lowered to provide an enjoyable space for children with disabilities to play with their families and each other. Admission to low-sensory evenings is free for families of children with disabilities and reservations are required.

Elitch Gardens Theme & Water Park


Guests who wish to use the accessible entrance or have a prosthetic device should visit guest relations to receive a ride access pass. Strollers and wheelchairs are available for a rental fee at the Entry Pavillion Service Center on a first-come, first-served basis.
