Denver’s promise of access to gold in the nearby mountains drew folks from all over the world. As the city grew, more immigrants were drawn by the numerous jobs the burgeoning city offered. Among those immigrant groups, the Irish would have a profound and lasting impact, though not all of them were as famous as Margaret Brown and J. K. Mullen. Join History Colorado for a look at the stories and places that connect us to this rich immigrant thread in the dynamic tapestry of the city’s history. While you won’t find a pot of gold at the end of the tour, we’re sure a little luck of the Irish will go home with you.

The ancient forest of Reenroe Beach in Ballinskelligs holds a deep and mysterious secret. Runes, hewn into the petrified wood and written in a long forgotten language hold the key to a sacred music ritual involving brass, bagpipes and dancing that early Celts believed would purify the soul and lead to a long and prosperous life. Archaeologists refer to this ritual as Dúiseacht Ceilteach, better known as … Celtic Awakening. Join the Denver Brass, Celtic Colorado Pipes & Drum, Celtic Steps Irish Dance School, Rocky Mountain Highland Dancers, Soprano Aubrey Jacobs and Joshua Messick - Hammered Dulcimer, as they perform the sacred rites of Celtic Awakening.

WHERE: Healy House & Dexter Cabin, Leadville
During the late 1800s, what was once a small gold camp in the high mountains of Colorado became one of the most important Irish immigrant communities in the United States. Three-thousand Irish born residents came from other mining communities across North America and the British Isles, seeking work. They occupied the lowest rung on the social ladder, with nearly two thirds of the men working underground. Facing stark poverty and with few opportunities to improve their livelihoods, the Leadville Irish formed some of the strongest and most important labor unions in Colorado. Although this is not an uplifting story, we hold it up to the light as a way to demonstrate how first and second generation immigrant laborers fought for a dignified existence—a story that continues to this day.

Scruffy Murphy's is easily one of the most authentic slices of the Emerald Isle you'll find in Denver. Just minutes away from Coors Field, it's the perfect place to grab a pint or enjoy some traditional Irish pub fare: shepherd's pie, bangers and mash and more.
DON'T MISS: Thursday through Saturday, Scruffy Murphy's hosts musical acts, from DJs spinning to rock bands shaking the stage.
My Brother's Bar is a Mile High City institution known for its Beat Generation clientele; this was the watering hole of choice for renowned Beats Jack Kerouac and Neal Cassady in the 1950s. Today, not much has changed at My Brother's Bar — you can still get a pint and a burger for under $10 and enjoy one of the city's coolest spots.
DON'T MISS: The sunny patio, tucked around the back of My Brother's.
Amidst the dive-y rock clubs and indie boutiques of South Broadway, you'll encounter the Irish Rover, a relaxed and friendly pub. Enjoy a pint or two, chat with the locals, sit by the fireplace or on your high stool at the bar. International sports fans love the Rover for its six large televisions, broadcasting rousing football games (European-style, of course).
DON'T MISS: The Irish Rover's huge rooftop patio. One of the best places to get above it all in Denver.
While there are plenty of Irish pubs in Denver, the city also has a fantastic British-style joint in Pints Pub, located just down the street from Denver Art Museum. At Pints, you'll find the charm and personality of the "local," a place that serves as a crossroads for society, where good beer, good food and good conversation are on the bill.
DON'T MISS: The extensive selection of single malt whisky — the menu is 16 pages long!
This Downtown mainstay was opened in 1992 by John and Una Nallen, who moved to Denver after immigrating to New York from County Mayo, Ireland in 1972.
DON'T MISS: Stop by the pub for a glimpse into Denver’s Irish culture through concerts and Irish dance.
Head south to Greenwood Village for lunch, happy hour, dinner or late-night eats and drinks. Slattery’s is the perfect spot to grab a bite before a show at Fiddler’s Green or Comedy Works South.
DON'T MISS: Inventive spins on classic Irish dishes, like corned beef eggrolls, Irish nachos, lamb stew, a corned beef sandwich, shepherd's pie, and bangers and mash.
